Construction of Our Closed Systems at Sea Has Started

Hofseth’s investment in closed sea-based systems is now moving from planning to construction. The first molds for five closed facilities for salmon production, to be deployed in Storfjorden, are currently being manufactured in Måløy.

Hofseth holds six development licenses linked to the closed-system concept Egget®, developed by Ovum. After several generations of fish have been produced in the pilot facility, which has been in operation at Gjermundneset in Vestnes since 2023, the company has gained valuable experience. This knowledge has formed the foundation for a new and improved design of the closed system now under construction.

Succeeding Globally by Investing Locally

At Hofseth, contributing innovation that enables sustainable growth in seafood production is a key driver for us. Our investment in closed sea-based systems is an important step in addressing several of the challenges facing the aquaculture industry. Our goal is to support sustainable growth through solutions that reduce challenges related to sea lice and fish escape, while also enabling the collection of sludge.

-With the design phase behind us, we are now entering the execution phase. It will be exciting to see the solutions and concepts we have developed perform as intended in practice. We are looking forward to good progress in the construction work, with the goal of stocking the first fish in Egget® in Storfjorden in just over a year,” says Nordal.

In connection with the start of construction works, a kick-off meeting was held at EasyForm in Måløy. Several of the key stakeholders in the project participated in the meeting to clarify roles, areas of responsibility, and the further project schedule.

Ovum is the design and engineering company behind the concept for the closed containment system. CEO Cato Lyngøy is pleased that construction is now underway. -We are very pleased that Hofseth is now commencing construction of the first full-scale system based on the Egget® concept. This marks an important milestone for everyone involved. The focus now is on close collaboration throughout a demanding project execution,” says Lyngøy

Brimer is responsible for production, and Production Manager Henning Moltumyr is looking forward to the work now beginning. -We have extensive experience with large and complex projects, and we find it very exciting to be part of such a development project. We believe that closed containment systems will play an important role in reducing environmental impact, which makes this project particularly motivating to be involved in,” says Moltumyr.

The world’s largest hub for closed containment systems at Dyrkorn

Once the moulds are completed in Måløy, they will be transported by ship to Latvia, where the components for the closed containment systems will be produced. Upon completion, the systems will be shipped back to Norway and assembled in the Sunnmøre region.

If the project proceeds as planned, fish will be stocked in the first Egget® unit in early 2027. In total, five such units will be constructed and installed in the Storfjord, off the coast of Dyrkorn.

While work on site clearance and approvals at Dyrkorn is ongoing, several other preparations are also underway. The buildings taken over by Hofseth are being refurbished, and work is in progress to establish the necessary infrastructure, including power supply, oxygen supply, and onshore facilities for operations.

Several of the key stakeholders in the project participated in the meeting to clarify roles, areas of responsibility, and the further project schedule.
Five full-scale closed systems will be built outside Dyrkorn, setting a new standard for sustainable fish farming with zero lice, no escapes, and even better fish welfare.
